Exclusive Q&A with Brit Singer/Songwriter Ed Sheeran

2012   |   Written by Teen Vogue

Take one listen to Ed Sheeran’s “The A Team” and you’ll understand why we can’t get enough of this 20-year-old ginger from across the pond. A singer-songwriter with an affection for hip-hop, Ed put out 2011’s highest selling album in the UK and has four Brit Award nominations under his belt. Lucky for us, Ed’s bringing his debut US album + stateside this summer.

What’s your favorite thing about coming to New York?
The food! Pizza pies are wicked, bagels with salmon and cream cheese. Coffee. There were a couple of things I needed to do while I was in New York. One was to have a pizza pie, one was to get a tattoo… and the other was to get a Yankees hat.

How many guitars did you bring with you on the tour?
Two. Felix and Nigel.

Which do you prefer?
Nigel, he’s the old-school one.

You have a great music video, “Drunk”, featuring a cat. Is that your cat?
No, I wish it was. There’s actually two of them. The main one’s called Dave and it’s a girl— don’t ask me why. They’re in Harry Potter and James Bond and Pirates of the Caribbean and stuff like that. They’re called acting cats.

And you have another association with Harry Potter. Rupert Grint aka Ron Weasley was in one of your music videos, “Lego House”. Are you friends?
I’d say he’s my buddy, he’s cool. He actually did the video for free, which shows that he’s a very nice guy. I think his sister is a musician and is a fan and that’s how he heard of me originally.

Your debut album in the states + drops in June. Do you have a favorite song on the album?
Probably “Give me Love”.

What song would the Teen Voguers like most?
“Kiss Me”. That’s my Twilight tune, a song you’d have on the Twilight soundtrack.

Have you met a lot of girls while touring?
I had a longtime girlfriend for four years through school and that was pretty much throughout my whole touring experience up until June. I’d like to say that I’m a rock star but I’m not— I’m honestly more of a relationship kind of guy. I’m a guy you could take home to meet your mum rather than a guy your mum wouldn’t like.

Big Valentine’s Day plans?
I did a 4 track EP with Yelawolf and I gave that away on Valentine’s Day.

To a special someone or to everyone?
To everyone. My special someones.
